A brake transmission interlock will apply the brake if the driver’s seat is empty, as well as if the seatbelts are not buckled properly or at all. In vehicles equipped with a brake shift interlock, it is impossible to shift gears without first pressing in the brake pad.

Brake shift interlock systems are also vital to protect against children accidentally shifting a parked car into another gear, as they will not shift without depressing the brake pedal.
